Beating Blue Monday

January 2024

January can be especially hard for grievers, with all the focus on new starts and a new year that we are acutely aware our loved one is not a part of.

Here are some important things to remember if you are struggling:

  • We all have good and bad days – you are not alone.
  • Talk to others – the WAY community is here for you and totally understand what you are going through.
  • Reflect on your mental well being and think about the things that you can do to boost your mood.

WAY members shared some of the things they do to help them feel better.

  • Read an uplifting book
  • Take a walk in the countryside with my dog
  • Visit a friend for a cup of tea
  • Cook some healthy meals
  • Gentle exercise
  • Taking some time out and having a relaxing bath
  • Share some happy memories of your loved one
  • Reach out and talk to someone

If you are struggling to cope, speak to your GP. There are also support services available 24/7 in the UK:

Samaritans helpline – 116 123

Text SHOUT to 85258

In an emergency, or if you are in danger, call 999.
