Dying Matters: death, dying and grief in the workplace

May 2023

We are supporting Hospice UK’s #DyingMatters campaign. During Dying Matters Awareness Week, they are encouraging everyone to come together to talk about death, dying and grief in the workplace.

We are calling for all workplaces to adopt a bereavement policy to support their staff

When you are grieving, understandably, your world can feel as though it has been turned upside down and being productive at work can often feel impossible. Time off from work can be incredibly important for someone’s grieving process.

In a survey of 1,000 people conducted by Dying Matters,44% of people didn’t believe the bereavement leave offered by their company was sufficient and half have used annual leave for bereavement leave.

We are calling for all workplaces to adopt a bereavement policy to support their team members when they lose a loved one.

We have a template of our bereavement policy here which workplaces can customise and implement in their organisation.

“When a family member passed away suddenly, WAY’s bereavement policy allowed me the opportunity to process this and to spend valuable time with loved ones. Everyone was very supportive, and my manager was able to talk me through what options I had to help me and my family.” – WAY’s Digital Marketing Officer

Nothing can take away the grief, but workplaces can make a huge difference in caring for employees when they need it most.
