Running the Cambridge Half Marathon for WAY: Vicky’s story

March 2026

As WAY’s Communications Manager, Vicky is usually the one writing about other people’s achievements – this time, she’s sharing her own story...

“On Sunday, 8 March (International Women’s Day), I ran my first ever half marathon through the streets of Cambridge, raising more than £600 for WAY – the charity that has supported me personally since I was widowed at 39. I crossed the finish line in just over two hours, something that felt completely unimaginable when I was first widowed.

Losing a partner young is something you never expect, and the path afterwards can feel isolating and overwhelming. WAY was there for me during those early days, offering friendship, understanding and a community of people who truly get what it’s like.

Running this half marathon was my way of giving back – and celebrating the resilience of everyone WAY supports.

Taking part in the run on International Women’s Day made it feel even more special. The support through the streets of Cambridge was incredibly motivating. Each of the 13.1 miles was a personal milestone, a tribute to the young widowed people WAY supports, and a reflection on how far I’ve come since the early days of my bereavement, when even leaving the house with a toddler in tow felt like an enormous challenge.

Thanks to the generosity of friends, family and supporters, my half marathon challenge has raised more than £600, helping WAY continue to provide vital peer support and connection to young people across the UK who have sadly lost their life partner too.

Although my legs are still aching, I’m so proud to be part of this charity’s story – and I couldn’t be more grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way.”
