Weekend away with WAY: Adventure, laughter and community
March 2026
Adventure, laughter and a powerful sense of community were at the heart of a recent WAY activity weekend at PGL near Grantham, where around 50 WAY members and children came together for a memorable few days away.
The weekend offered a welcome escape from everyday life, with a packed schedule of outdoor activities designed to challenge, inspire and bring bereaved families together. The most energetic attendees threw themselves into everything from climbing and archery to laser quest and the ever-popular Giant Swing, while parents had the chance to relax, connect and enjoy seeing their children thrive.
“It always amazes me how quickly a bunch of widows can relax and get along with each other as if they’ve known each other for years,” said one second-time attendee, Sharon. “I think being around others who instantly ‘get it’ is very powerful.”
Families were split into small groups for activities, helping both children and adults to bond quickly. The supportive atmosphere meant everyone could take part at their own pace.
“The staff at PGL were great fun and were clearly very good at guiding us through all the activities safely,” said Sharon. “Everyone was supportive of each other and you could participate in as much or as little as you felt comfortable with.”
There were also plenty of lighter moments woven into the weekend – from bunk-bed chatter and quizzes to the simple joy of shared meals. With all catering taken care of, families were able to focus fully on spending time together. For many, that in itself felt like a luxury.
“Having three meals a day made for us was my personal highlight,” said Sharon. “Not having to decide what to cook, tidy up and wash up each day was a real treat, and the food at PGL was particularly good. They provided such a good variety of options, including a daily salad bar, that even the fussiest eaters amongst us were well catered for.”
By the end of the weekend, friendships had strengthened, confidence had grown, and both children and adults left with a renewed sense of connection and positivity.
“What I really valued about the weekend was the opportunity to hang out with like-minded families,” said Sharon. “Although none of our kids are having the childhoods we’d have hoped for them, there was such a great sense of adventure and positivity at PGL, which meant that we all knew we were creating new exciting memories with them that they would never forget. The kids formed their own tribe – I never heard any of them mention that one of their parents had died – but there was a great unspoken connection between them all, a fantastic camaraderie.”
For those considering attending WAY events in future, the message from Sharon is clear: “Do it!! Everyone is super friendly and welcoming. You won’t regret it – and remember, no cooking or washing up for three whole days...”
