Fantastic Fundraisers in July

June 2023

Our fabulous fundraisers have raised more than £6,000 for WAY over the past few weeks by taking on a range of challenges – from cycling to walking to golfing!

WAY member Carol (far left) and her team took on a 100-mile cycle through London and Essex as part of the RideLondon Challenge and raised more than £4,700.

Carol told us: “I was so happy to cross the line and very proud of myself and my lovely team. I’m so pleased we raised so much for WAY and I had some good chats with people on the way round, telling them about WAY.

All in all it was a fantastic experience with plenty of memories made along the way, between the training cycling rides in the pouring rain and learning about all the kit that would make it easier (padded shorts, Strava, indoor bike trainer). I have learnt a lot and proved to myself that I am resilient and stubborn if nothing else!”

It’s not too late to show Carol your support here.

In spite of last-minute injuries and health issues, WAY members Ben, Claire and Karli managed to raise more than £1,600 for WAY as part of the London to Brighton Ultra Challenge. You can show them your support here.

Meanwhile, WAY member Natasha presented a trophy at Gosfield Golf Club in Essex in memory of her husband Mark. A memorial day competition raised £350 for WAY. A BIG thank you to Natasha and all at the club for their kind donation.

Fundraising challenges coming up in July…

On Saturday, 8 July a team from our corporate partners Mainstay Recruitment are planning to climb Mount Snowdon not once but three times to raise funds for WAY and Mind Birmingham!! Show them your support.

On Sunday, 9 July, some of our member’s friends have organised a charity football match in her husband’s memory. Nicky’s husband Clax was a founder member of the club and is much missed. They are raising funds for WAY and you can support them here .

Later in July, Clax’s brother in law Matt is taking on a massive seven marathons in seven days and fundraising for WAY. Matt is a keen runner, but this will be a massive challenge even for him! Hear more from Matt about why he is fundraising.

On 15 July, we have another charity football match in Stockport,  now in its second year, run by member Judith in memory of her husband. Donations will be collected at the Stockport Town match.

Join the fundraising fun!

We’re still looking for team members for a few of our fun fundraising challenges over the next few weeks and months to help raise vital funds for our charity:

  • Come and join the fun at the Dragon Boat Race in Kingston Upon Thames on Sunday, 16 July! We’re looking for a few keen paddlers on the day, but we’d also love as many WAY friends and supporters as possible to come along and cheer the teams on their way!

  • We’re still looking for a couple of teams to take on one of the Tough Mudder challenge events this year for WAY. There’s a 20% discount for anyone fundraising for WAY and 2 teams can earn a free place each. More info here.

  • There’s still time to enter one of the late summer Ultra Challenge events. You don’t have to walk 100km (unless you want to!). There are lots of other options too. Find out more here .

  • Look out for details of our own Summer Challenge which will go live soon!

  • And last but not least, we’ve just signed up with an exciting company called Charity Challenge, who take people all over the world on challenges – from a Thames Path walk to a trek to Everest Base Camp! Find out more here.

Join our Summer Challenge!

Please consider supporting WAY by taking on some fundraising for us. Over the summer we are launching a new campaign, WAY’s Summer Challenge. To take part all you need to do is design a challenge for yourself or your family or friends. Make it fun – and get in touch with our Community Fundraiser Elanor McBay for joining instructions at fundraising@widowedandyoung.org.uk.
