Hannah’s haircut in memory of Mum

January 2025

At just 11 years old, Hannah is proving that age is no barrier when it comes to making an impact.

Inspired by her Mum, Angela, who died of cancer in 2017, Hannah decided to cut her long locks and donate a foot and a half of hair to the Little Princess Trust – a charity that creates wigs for children and young people who lose their hair due to cancer treatments or other conditions.

Remembering how her mum lost her hair and wore wigs during her cancer treatment, Hannah wanted to do something to help young people going through similar challenges.

“Hannah has never had her hair cut fully,” said Hannah’s Dad, Gary, who is a Trustee for WAY Widowed and Young.

“Several times we’ve gone to get the ends tidied,” he added. “But it’s never been cut short – and it was sitting at a great length.”

As well as donating her incredibly long hair, Hannah also wanted to raise money to support two charities that are close to her family’s heart, splitting funds equally between them both:

  • Macmillan Cancer Support, for the care and support they provided to Angela during her treatment.
  • WAY Widowed and Young, for the community and support they’ve offered to Hannah and her dad since Angela died.

Hannah’s haircut is took place on Angela’s birthday on 2 February, making this an especially meaningful tribute. Initially, Gary set a fundraising target of £500 – but thanks to Hannah’s determination and the generosity of supporters, she has raised more than £3,200!

“Despite all the challenges we’ve faced, Hannah continues to inspire me every day,” said Gary.  “I am incredibly proud of her especially as all of this was her idea. She started looking into things, she made the decision to cut her hair, she wanted to raise money for the two charities. I have helped her along the way but it has all been started by her.”
