Land’s End to John O’Groats: Douggie’s charity cycle ride in memory of his Dad
October 2026
After a challenging fortnight in the saddle, a WAY member’s son, Douggie, looks back on the incredible support he received and the £10,000 raised for WAY, the British Heart Foundation and Angus Lawson Memorial Trust (ALMT) in memory of his Dad.
This September, the 21-year-old son of one of our members cycled more than 1,700 kilometres from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise funds for WAY and two other charities in memory of his dad, who died ten years ago.
“From the south coast of England, through the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales, up to the Cairngorms and through the Highlands, I’m not sure I’ll ever forget this journey,” said Douggie. “With more than 1,700 kilometres and 18,000 metres of climbing, the journey certainly took its toll on my legs, but the views were worth it.”
“The ride itself was, of course, extremely tough and challenging, both physically and, probably even more so, mentally,” he said. “Solo days in the saddle, with no music and no one to talk to – just myself and my sore body – resulted in some real mental battles over the fortnight I was riding. However, knowing the support I had behind me, from all of you, helped me get through the hardest days.”
“I’m truly glad I did it”
What also helped Douggie to stay motivated was raising more than £10,000 for his three chosen charities – WAY, the British Heart Foundation and the Angus Lawson Memorial Trust (ALMT).
“The money means so much to both me and the charities it will support,” he said. “It will help WAY support grieving families and ensure they get the support they need; fund life-saving research through the British Heart Foundation, so others don’t have to go through what I did; and support children around the world through ALMT, helping them to live the lives they deserve.”
“Cycle rides are some of the best memories I have of [me and my Dad] together,” he said. “So raising money for charities close to my heart this way is something I have always wanted to do. “I’m truly glad I did it.”
