Congratulations to our 2023 Mandy Burrows Memorial Award nominees

May 2023

Congratulations to all of our wonderful nominees, who have been put forward for our 2023 Mandy Burrows memorial award for outstanding contribution to WAY over the past year.

Mandy Burrows was a WAY member who died at the age of just 30 in January 2014. Many members and friends donated money to a collection for WAY at her funeral and we decided that the best way to remember Mandy for many years to come was to use these funds for a memorial award.

Brenda

Brenda has been nominated for setting up a DIY sub group called DI-WAY and being an overall star.

“There are now over 200 members in the group and it's growing every week.  It's great to have somewhere where we can get advice & support with people who just 'get it'. I'm so pleased that other members have found the group so useful.”

Scott

Scott has been nominated for spending his own time each week to create and host the online pub quiz on Friday nights.

"By hosting the quiz I help people make friends that they can feel like they are just a normal person and maybe forget that they are a widow even if it’s just for a few hours with some light hearted friendly banter."

Kristine

Kristine has been nominated for hosting weekly zooms and bringing members together at a wide range of events.

"I have suddenly come to the realisation that I want to help others going through the complicated grieving process. I want to look back at my life one day with no regrets and the notion that I have achieved something meaningful."

Becky (previous award winner)

Becky has been nominated for all of her time she spends helping others and organising member events.

"Being with others who have lost such a special significant person and talking/sharing experiences with them is like finding my tribe. Meeting others who are navigating the same journey has been such a lifeline for me and I want to help other members find that same support."

Emma

Emma has been nominated for supporting new members and bringing the WAY Cambridgeshire community closer together by regularly organising events.

"We've had some very new members join recently and I hope they continue to find support and friendship in the same way that I have."

Georgia

Georgia has been nominated for her years of work campaigning for families to receive bereavement support payments.

"The day the change in the law was read out in parliament I cried for all those widows I knew would receive the money they were owed and felt so proud that WAY had been the driving force for this change."

Orla

Orla has been nominated for bringing members together with her weekly yoga sessions that allow time to relax and meditate.

"Seeing the impact on others has warmed my heart and filled my soul with so much gratitude for what I do. Knowing that sharing something I love with others, that helps others - it's hard to put into words how much that has benefitted me too."
