Stepping up for WAY: 100,000 steps in Charlie’s memory

June 2025

On Thursday, 11 July, the incredible women at Team VG, led by fitness coach Verity Garrington, will be lacing up their walking shoes for their annual 100,000 Step Challenge in 24 hours – this time they’ll be supporting WAY Widowed and Young.

Now in its third year, the York-based walking event has raised thousands of pounds for local causes. But this year the ladies online bootcamp decided to support a charity that has a very personal connection for one of their members, Helen (pictured).

Helen’s partner Charlie died in June 2024 after he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while doing his round as a postman. He was just 45.

“Charlie and I had so many dreams, so many plans, so many things to discover together and all that has now gone,” says Helen. “WAY has been a lifeline to me. I’ve met people who will be friends for life who understand the loss of a partner, as sadly they too have lost their person.”

“Raising money to help this amazing charity is so important,” adds Helen. “And I am so very humbled that Team VG has chosen to support WAY. Thank you.”

Team VG founder Verity, who is organising the fundraiser, explains:

“Myself and Team VG love supporting local charities, and each year as a business we try to do what we can to give back. This year, the charity we’ve chosen is WAY as one of our incredible members has recently had to rely on their support. When she told me about her experience – the care she received, the kindness of everyone she met, and how much it meant to her – it really stuck with me.”

“I hadn’t heard of the charity before, but after hearing what a difference they made in her life, it felt like a no-brainer to get behind them this year,” she says. “They’re clearly doing amazing work, and we’re proud to do our bit to raise awareness and funds for them.”

Team VG is taking on the 100k step challenge around York city centre, starting at 4:30am on 11 July. Everyone is welcome to join in – whether for the full distance or just a few steps.
