Sunny skies for WAY’s Big Picnic weekend

May 2023

The sun came out for WAY’s Big Picnic weekend, enticing more than 400 WAY members, friends and family to roll out their picnic blankets at 38 picturesque picnic locations from North Wales to Norfolk and from Jersey to Aberdeen.

WAY’s Big Picnic weekend is a once-a-year opportunity for WAY members, volunteers, friends and family to meet up with friends old and new and to showcase what WAY is all about – friendship, understanding and support.

Kirsty, a volunteer at one of Scotland’s events, told us: “We had 31 people, 2 dogs and a guitar today! We chatted, played games and made connections with new people, as well as eating our picnics. There was a fantastic range – from members who have been with WAY for many years to members who have joined more recently. It just proves that WAY becomes part of new-normal life – it doesn’t need to be a temporary stop gap!”

WAY’s Chief Executive Stephanie Patrick said: “I was absolutely delighted to see so many Big Picnics taking place this year all across the UK under sunny skies – including the first Channel Island Big Picnic! WAY’s annual Big Picnic events are such a great opportunity for young widowed people to get together and connect. I would encourage anyone who has never attended a Big Picnic to give it a go next year!”
