Young widow organises Euro 2024 sweepstake to support widowed charity

June 2024

In memory of her late husband, a young widow has organised a Euro 2024 football sweepstake to raise funds for WAY Widowed and Young – the charity that has provided her with crucial support since her husband’s death to suicide in November 2022.

“My husband loved football and was a dedicated Liverpool FC fan,” said Jessica. “This sweepstake is a lovely way to honour him and remember our loved ones through something that they would have loved too.”

During Men’s Health Week (1-16 June), Jessica invited other young widows and widowers who are members of WAY’s peer support network to take part in the sweepstake. The initiative not only aims to raise funds for WAY but also to increase awareness about mental health, particularly among men.

Like Jessica, many WAY members struggle during high-profile sports events like the Euros that they may have watched previously with their late partner. She is hoping the sweepstake will help to provide a welcome distraction for other widows and widowers during what could be a difficult few weeks for many.

The winner of the sweepstake will be rewarded with a bouquet of flowers, a small token in recognition of people’s participation and support.

Jessica has so far raised more than £240, with the support of fellow WAY member and co-organiser Scott.
