Trustees’ Week: Celebrating WAY’s ten terrific Trustees

November 2024

To mark Trustees’ Week, we take the chance to say thank you to WAY’s Trustees

As we celebrate Trustees’ Week (4-8 November), we wanted to extend our heartfelt thanks to ten incredibly committed and dedicated individuals who serve on WAY’s Board of Trustees.

Trusteeship is often a role that goes unrecognised, but it is central to everything we do as a charity. Each of WAY’s ten trustees brings unique expertise and insight to the role – and they dedicate their time freely as volunteers to make sure our charity can continue to offer invaluable peer support for young widowed people across the UK.

WAY’s National Volunteer Manager Veronica Currie said: “I wanted to extend a public thank you to WAY’s trustees, who volunteer their time and their skills to help ensure good governance of the charity and to help drive the charity forward.”

“In the three years since Neil died, I have thrown myself into work, travel and things that bring me joy – but I was conscious I wanted to be able to give something back to WAY. I was exceptionally proud to be appointed as a Trustee. I have 22 years’ experience in communications and marketing, and I bring crisis management, editorial and social media guidance to the Board. The WAY Board is truly brilliant; it’s hard to not feel inspired by the rest of them as they are all really knowledgeable, passionate and driven folk.”

“For me it’s about giving back. It’s seeing the value that I got from WAY and the lifeline that it was to me and being able to be involved and shape the charity and how it reaches out to other people and how we can support others going forward. I’ve got a background in teaching, education, finance and insurance so I’ve got lots of different skills that I can hopefully bring to the board and lots of different experience that I can use to try and collaborate with others and help other members of the charity.”

Lawyer Marcos explains why he volunteers his time to support WAY:

“I find it incredibly rewarding to be able to use my professional legal skills to support a charity trying to do so much good for people who find themselves in such difficult circumstances.”

WAY Trustee Marcos Eleftheriou

Our newest trustee – Scottish WAY member Gary – explains why he decided to become a Trustee:

“After organising events for the Glasgow area for a number of years, I eventually signed up as an official WAY volunteer and then, when the chance came round to become a Trustee, I was interested right away. I wanted to be part of giving back to the charity that has done a lot for me as well as hopefully providing help to others.”
